Engaged in Mission: Nancy Frykman

Engaged in Mission: Nancy Frykman

On October 14, 2011, Nancy Frykman settled in to watch Diane Sawyer’s 20/20 special, Hidden America: Children of the Plains. By the end of the newscast Nancy knew the Lord was calling on her to make a difference in the lives of the children of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is plagued with extreme economic, health and social challenges: the unemployment rate is over 80%, the high school drop out rate is over 70%, 49% of the residents live below the federal poverty line, the adolescent suicide rate is four times the United States national average, and alcoholism is rampant, to name a few. These are realities seen first hand by many of Colonial’s Confirmation classes, as the youth group has sent many mission teams to this area over the years.

What Nancy learned broke her heart and she knew she had to act. God awakened a passion in her to help improve an unacceptable situation, so that the children of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation may have the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Nancy hopes to leverage established relationships as well as build new ones in order to help improve current living conditions and create future economic development opportunities by focusing on three areas: education, job training, and housing development.

While her plans for how best to serve the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation are in the development stages, Nancy is full of ideas. For example, she envisions the possibility of leveraging technology, specifically computers, to use in the classroom as well as to provide job training. Supporting teachers in the classroom may also be an opportunity to help. Another idea is to improve the homes people live in while providing on-the-job training to aspiring constructors on the reservation.

The need is great, but Nancy knows that with the Lord, nothing is impossible. Nancy hopes to mobilize and engage the congregation of Colonial Church to be the hands and feet of Christ for the children of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Nancy’s story is another example of those who are engaged in mission outside the walls of Colonial. Her story has inspired others, who nominated her for the piece, which was prepared by Journalism Task Force member Emily Soltvedt.
