March 16th. Turning Point #5

March 16th. Turning Point #5

This week, in follow-up to Sunday’s Sermon and 2nd hour activity/discussion, our Lenten devotionals feature stories of “Turning Points”–moments where one’s journey moved in a new direction.

TAKE A MOMENT TO BREATHE IN GOD’S PRESENCE as you begin.

2 Corinthians 3:17-18

17 For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And God—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like God as we are changed into God’s glorious image.

“Did it ever occur to you that you could do it differently?” By Tracy Mooty

This was one of the most pivotal questions in my life.  Bruce and I had been dating for nearly a year and were very much in love.  Without my advanced knowledge, he took the very bold and important step of coming to my apartment one evening to ask me to marry him.

What became clear to me in that moment is the overwhelming fear that I was bound to repeat the kind of marriage I had seen growing up, which was not very healthy or loving.  As crazy as it sounds, I quickly concluded that I would never want to do that to someone I loved so deeply so I tried to explain this complicated thinking in the best way I knew how and concluded by saying, “No.”  Of course I was sick about it, but at the same time I was convinced I’d make a mess of any marriage.

By God’s grace, about a month later, Bruce appeared at my door saying that he had just one other question to ask me:

“Did it ever occur to you that you could do it differently?”

Did it ever occur to me that I could do it differently? While I know this sounds dramatic, it is nonetheless true that at that very moment I felt like the clouds parted and a beam of divine light and truth descended upon me and for the first time it occurred to me that it actually was possible for me to craft a very different marriage.  Wit that, I changed my response to a resounding, “YES!” and we were married the following spring!

REFLECTION. What is a moment where God showed up in your life and the direction you were headed changed? Pause to reflect upon this. Then pray and give God thanks for God’s Spirit of freedom and truth who invites us to see ways in which we can, indeed, do life differently than what we have seen before.

TAKE A MOMENT OF SILENCE as you close.
