December 5th–the Stable
26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you. 29 But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. ” (Lk. 1:26-29)
Reflection (Christian Collins Winn):
What a unique time of the year this is. The animals are all coming in to get warm; there’s lots of hay and feed for the sheep, and the cows. And there is so much hustle and bustle going on that it’s during this time of year that I get to feel really useful and important.
You see my job is to give shelter to the animals, and occasionally to guests of the family that owns me. It can get kind of smelly, but my owners keep the place pretty tidy, and they are really good about doing repairs. They really care for their animals!
This year, though, something amazing has happened! A woman and man came to stay. And before I knew it, the woman had given birth to a child. So I got to host this little family. The animals were all so quiet and respectful that I knew there must be something special about this family! Then, when visitors started showing up, I thought that there must have been some kind of mistake, but whenever there are humans who stay with me in the stable, they don’t usually get visitors. But there was something so special about this little baby that shepherds, and even great wise men visited. It made me feel extra-special that I got to host them!
What special experience have you had this Christmas season?
Heavenly Father, help me to see the unique and special gifts that you give during this season. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
