The Stable —(Cheryl Southard)

December 22nd– The Stable

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,

and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” (Lk. 2:13-14)

Reflection (Cheryl Southard):

How can the scene that unfolded inside my walls be described?

The angels say the baby born here tonight is the Messiah! How could that possibly be? They say that God is among us– as a babe. That just feels like more waiting. God comes in a stable– not a palace?

How will the news be proclaimed?

The One we have longed for was welcomed by oxen and sheep. Where is the power in that? Will a babe free the oppressed? Will a baby change the world?

Where is the hope in that– a child?

And yet…The angels have said it is so. Shepherds are already sharing the news. Magi came from afar to bow to him– imagine that!

So many questions seemingly unanswered. What does this baby mean for the world?

What does he mean for me?

What does waiting for new life mean to you?

God of good news, remind us of what this story means, and help us to see our place in it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
