December 16th– Joseph
67 Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy:
68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
for he has looked favorably on his people and redeemed them.
69 He has raised up a mighty savior for us
in the house of his servant David,
70 as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
71 that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. (Lk. 1:67-71)
Reflection (Jean MacDonald):
Which path should I take?
What is the right thing to do?
I’m so upset and disappointed. Mary is with child; a child she says was conceived by the Holy Spirit; a baby who is supposed to be God’s son.
What if she’s right?
Am I crazy?
She seemed so serene when she told me the news…. And she is a woman of the highest character.
What do I do?
I know I have only two choices. Either I turn her in to the righteous men of Nazareth… or I can quietly dissolve our marriage contract, and act like it never happened! She could move away to a place where no one knows her story, she wouldn’t come under condemnation by the leaders of our community… that feels like the right thing to do… maybe? I can’t stand the thought of watching my betrothed being publicly humiliated, no matter how she became pregnant. Maybe Mary’s right. I will choose the plan for a quiet divorce. I will choose to listen to Mary. It will be painful and hard, but it is the right thing to do…
Who do you listen to when you have to make a decision?
God of faithfulness, speak through our lives, through our people, and through us. Give us ears to hear your voice. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
