Christmas: Day 5- The Shepherd with the Staff

Christmas: Day 5- The Shepherd with the Staff

Fifth Sunday of Advent

Day 5. December 5, 2019

Nativity Companion: The Shepherd with the Staff

Opening Prayer: God our Good Shepherd, might we trust your care
for us. Breathe in us that we might encounter and follow you more wholeheartedly. AMEN.

Scripture- Luke 1:18-20

Zechariah said to the angel, “How will I know that this is so? For I am an old man, and my wife is getting on in years.” The angel replied, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. But now, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time, you will become mute, unable to speak, until the day these things occur.”

Reflection:

I care for sheep. It’s my job. It’s what I do…and more than that, it’s who I am.

So consider God, who is way better at this than me.

Caring for you is who God is.
The God who knows your name.
The God who seeks you when you are out on your own.
And remember: you aren’t alone.

I’m just saying: I know this well. And I’m just a human shepherd.

So take a breath.
Release and relax.
God’s got you.

It’s God’s job, and more than that… it’s who God is.

Questions for Consideration:

  • Open your hands. Literally, right now… open them. Now breathe and pray a prayer of surrender and trust. Release yourself to the Good Shepherd. How does it feel?
  • How does knowing God is the Good Shepherd invite you to show love and care with others? Take a minute today to do an intentional random act of kindness in following our Good Shepherd.

Closing Prayer:

God who knows our name, might we hear from and learn to trust you more. Breathe in us oh Spirit of life, that we might live your love and care in the world. AMEN.
