Christmas. Day 33: Elizabeth

Christmas. Day 33: Elizabeth

Opening Prayer. Lord, please raise my eyes so I can see you more in others around me. AMEN.

For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.

– Jeremiah 29:11

Through the heartfelt mercies of our god, God’s Sunrise will break in upon us, Shining on those in the darkness, those sitting in the shadow of death, Then showing us the way, one foot at a time, down the path of peace.

–  Luke 1:78-79 (MSG)

For Everyone. From Cathy Pinske.

Who could believe this!  Zechariah, was visited by an angel, Gabriel, affirming that I, his old, barren wife, would conceive a son that will be great before the Lord!  He was so stunned by the visit he became mute; I became pregnant.

While in my 6th month my kin, Mary, visited me and my baby leaped for joy!  Truly a God-inspired moment as I knew then that she was the mother of my Lord, THE Lord that my future son, John, would soon serve.  It was so encouraging to have Mary with me until my time, sharing our miraculous pregnancies and relishing God’s work within each of us.

John was born and at our son’s circumcision, Zechariah gained his voice back after affirming our son’s name on a tablet. He spoke how John will be a “Prophet of the Highest” to go ahead of the Master to prepare his ways.

News of Mary’s time soon reached us.  Sheepherders near Bethlehem were visited by an angel announcing a great event that is meant for everyone: the birth of God’s son.  They saw for themselves the baby lying in a manger.

After 400 years of silence it is exhilarating to be intimately part of God’s plan to save us, but what will that look like “for everyone”? How will this plan unfold with John and Jesus? This is not an easy time for our people, especially with today’s political and spiritual climate.  All this mother can do is cling to God’s promises, praise his gift of life within me that now crawls on the floor, and continually prepare my heart to trust how, where, when He will deliver you and I.

Questions for Reflection

  • Where have you experienced silence in your life?
  • What does it mean and look like for God to be for you? How about that God is for everyone?

Closing Prayer. Lord, help me today to be an instrument of peace while clinging to your calm strength. AMEN.
