December 15

December 15

You are invited into a time of spiritual reflection and prayer in this Advent season—a season of waiting and listening, a season of expectation and hope.

O Lord, let me not conform to the ways of this world, but transform me by your Holy Spirit; renew me mind and heart that I may discern and do Your Will—what is good and acceptable and perfect. AMEN.

December 15. Future. Perfect.

Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.
Let those of us then who are mature be of the same mind; and if you think differently about anything, this too God will reveal to you. Only let us hold fast to what we have attained.
Philippians 3:12-16

REFLECTION from Alice Loddigs

This passage brought me back to my language studies so long ago, trying to understand the future perfect tense — describing an action which will have been completed (finished or “perfected”) at some point in the future. It includes an element of both now and then.
Pressing on, I seek to make the goal my own, even though Christ Jesus has already perfected me. This is at the center. As I strain to reach the prize, I am reminded that the call of God in Jesus Christ is already in my hand! Outrageous! My righteousness comes through faith in Jesus. And this emboldens me to face any new challenge or opportunity that life brings. It opens up the future. God calls me into action right now! So what do I have to fear? Nothing. I don’t need to make God’s plan mine… Christ Jesus has already chosen me to be on his team. Now and forever. Perfect.

PRAYER: God of reformation. Shape my thoughts and focus my attention on what lies ahead. Open my eyes and my heart to accept new direction from you. And in the process, lift up my spirit that I might embrace the larger goal you have created for me. AMEN.
