The purpose of camping ministry at Colonial Church is to provide a safe, fun and nurturing environment among peers where grade school and middle school students can experience the love, power and reality of Jesus Christ.
The 40+ year legacy and impact of Camp Pyro and Pyro 2 has been powerful. The many, many campers, counselors and leaders whose lives have been transformed by encounters with God at camp over the years is a testament to the power of the Holy Spirit at work in the camp setting. Students consistently identify their Colonial camp experiences as among the most important of their faith formation.
Over the last few years a few trends have emerged at Camp Pyro and Pyro 2: Counselors. Counselors are a key part of the camp experience. Experienced and responsible counselors set the stage for an amazing week of camp and help our staff execute camp in safe and meaningful ways. In recent years, our camp counselors have gotten younger and younger (9th and 10th graders for Camp Pyro). Although the counselors are wonderful students, many of them do not have the experience and full maturity to shepherd a cabin of young kids for a week. Additionally, due to the time frame of Camp Pyro and Pyro 2 many older, college-age students are unavailable to counsel.
School changes. Starting in the 2017-18 school year, Edina schools will be adding 9th graders to the high school. This change gives us a chance to re-evaluate our grade distribution at camp. Our largest populations at camp are rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Condensing camp would be a better fit for our middle school student ministry.
These two factors led us to conduct multiple conversations within our staff, the Colonial Church Council and in an appointed Pyro Working Group. Together we have made the following decisions and recommendations:
Pyro 2 will shift the grades attending to incoming 6-8 grades (with incoming 9 grade included in 2017 only).
Camp Pyro will be folded into Covenant Pines Trailblazers Camp for incoming 4-5 graders.

Counselor application available March 1, 2017
The friendships that are formed between campers and their counselors are one of the highlights each year of Pyro. Many of our counselors have been campers themselves, so they know what to expect and how to lead students throughout the week! Counselors fill out this application, undergo a background check, are interviewed face to face and receive training prior to Camp. If you are interested in counseling, have a relationship with Jesus, love to have fun and desire to help children grow in their faith, then apply here!
If you are currently a junior in High School or older you can apply for Pyro 2.
Camp Pyro will be using Covenant Pines Trailblazers counselors.
