Founded in 1971. CES focus is the inner city. They have consistently provided food, affordable housing assistance, help with utility bills, transportation to employment, job referrals, counseling, meals on wheels, resume help, advocacy for clients, urban softball series, shelter for homeless women, and several other services. Intertwined with the above services, CES strives to satisfy the soul with how Jesus can help them be whole in spirit as well as body. Among their goals are to foster a Christian environment throughout their ministry, assist in meeting the basic physical, emotional and spiritual needs of people, and to continually evaluate the needs of the community and address those most critical.

Founded in 1973. Focus is neighbors serving neighbors in need in our local communities; Edina, Bloomington, Richfield, and South Minneapolis. Though these communities are seemingly affluent, there are an alarming number of people suffering from hunger, poverty, disability and isolation. V.E.A.P. feels that inner city and worldwide hunger are very important, but our neighbors should also be remembered. V.E.A.P. provides a safety net to help turn around short-term crisis and equip clients with tools necessary to achieve long term goals. An immediate goal is to increase much needed storage space to accommodate more food and seasonal program storage, thus enabling them to provide to more neighbors in need. Supporting churches like Colonial provide the main way for donors and volunteers to become aware of V.E.A.P. and the services provided.

Our second international covenant partner is with the 16 villages of Quiquijana, Peru. For over 14 years, Colonial has supported this World Vision, Area Development Project, through financial support, prayer, and most importantly by sending teams of people. We have sent teams every summer since 1999 to work with the communities of Pamapquehuar, Huraypata, Usi and others to further their initiatives in village development by providing leadership development, children’s ministry, potable water sources, programs for harvesting additional crops and Guinea pig breeding as well as providing many medical, educational and hygienic products donated by many of Colonial members.

Calvary Drop in Center and Calvary’s C.O.O.L. Youth Center combined their efforts to offer services at Calvary Church to children and youth in three south Minneapolis neighborhoods: Powerderhorn, Central and Whittier. Their focus is providing academic support to children and youth through tutoring, strengthening skills and self-esteem programming, and safe recreational opportunities throughout the year including conflict resolution class, summer day camp, Bible camp and Bible school. Colonial volunteers have helped through tutoring, providing holiday food baskets, providing a meal and gifts for Christmas and hosting a meal one Sunday a month for the homeless in their kitchen.

Edina Meals on Wheels

Coordinated by Dianne Getsch, currently fourteen Colonial volunteers deliver a hot, nutritious meal to shut-ins twice a month through Meals on Wheels, a non-profit program that provides the meal and coordinates the delivery for the elderly through out Edina.

Families Moving Forward

Working with the Interfaith network of churches, this ministry offers emergency shelter to homeless families with children. In the host congregations it involves thousands of volunteers and serves more than 100 families a year, six to ten families at a time. Supporting the families includes advocacy and education by case managers who are licensed social workers, making nutritious snacks weekly, and continuing their two permanent affordable housing buildings with 35 units.

John and Sharon Thomas started a Twin Cities ministry called Glorybound in the late ’90s. Glorybound helps families who are left behind as a family member enters prison or a long-term drug treatment program. It is a ministry of mercy and practical help that comes alongside those who need something special at a very critical time in their lives. After Johns death in 2008 Sharon has courageously continued this important work serving dozens of families each year.

MOTN assists with re-entry by providing new opportunities for people recovering from chemical dependence, ex-offenders and those who are economically disadvantaged or homeless. Make Old Things New is a residence program that is Christ-Centered. It provides an environment with access to life skills and work skills where people in recovery can choose to rebuild their lives and be transformed. The residents are taught to identify their own assets and deficits, and helped to compensate for them in all facets of life. Equally important are the moral values taught and modeled to the residents such as service, honesty, respect, and faith. Healing cannot begin until brokenness is accepted with gratefulness. Each resident is challenged physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually with dignity. MOTN has a vision to help rebuild persons so that the cycles of crime, addiction, and recidivism, and reintegrate into society self-sustaining citizens who meet the responsibilities of family and community.

The Pilgrim Center for Reconciliation exists to strengthen and transform organizations, communities and nations by restoring the church, government, and civil society leaders who drive them. Since 1996, PCR has intense three-day small group, scripture based healing retreats in the African countries of Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, and Sudan. The focus is to restore Christian leaders so they can be peace builders and witnesses for the love and forgiveness of Jesus. What sets this ministry apart from other relief organizations is that their commitment to compassionate listening, to spending needed time with people, and to share the Word in a participatory way.

ICM exists to train church leaders and to help the church in the U.S. see its role in that process. This past year Greg and Deb have hosted 300 visitors from the U.S. and involved them in their work. They have traveled extensively throughout Africa in order to carry out their work. Greg traveled to Kilgali, Rwanda to open that country for ICM. He will be a part of a twice a year visit for three years where he will train pastors in Purpose Drive Ministry courses. The program has been launched in Kenya and Uganda as well. Greg and Deb had the privilege of hosting Rick Warren and Mark Carver of Saddleback Church when they were launching the program in Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda. Focus: ICM is a discipling organization focused on training church leaders in Africa.

Peruvian Partners serves disadvantaged families and children bringing hope to the hopeless through the person of Jesus Christ. The multi-faceted mission delivers biblical, career and life counseling; leadership development programs; education opportunities; health care solutions; emergency medical aide; dignified housing; micro-family enterprise strategies and early childhood stimulation. Our English camp in late February is a spectacular success each year as hundreds of children attended and many sign up to participate in Bible clubs after the camp finished. Many committed Peruvians and a group of great North American teachers helped to make the camp extra special.

Since the Colonial Chorale visit in 2005, Colonial is supporting the academy in Kyiv Ukraine, which seeks to mobilize the church there by leadership development training of music educators, Music Camps, the expansion of educational campuses, and professional music development.
