Calvary Baptist Church, Minneapolis

Temple Youth Center and Calvary Baptist Church’ C.O.O.L. Youth Center combined their efforts to offer services at Calvary Church to children and youth in three south Minneapolis neighborhoods:  Powerderhorn, Central and Whittier.  Their focus is providing academic support to children and youth through tutoring, strengthening skills and self-esteem programming, and safe recreational opportunities throughout the year including conflict resolution class, summer day camp, Bible camp and Bible school.  Colonial volunteers have helped through tutoring, providing holiday food baskets , providing a meal and gifts for Christmas and hosting a meal one Sunday a month for the homeless in their kitchen.

Make Old Things New, Minneapolis

Make Old Things New founded in 1984, is a local Minneapolis mission aimed at people who have typically exhausted all other sources of aid.  Those people come to the mission to live for 60 days to 18 months following periods of incarceration, chemical dependence treatment, abusive relationships, homelessness and other lonely and hopeless situations.   Most that are served by this mission are without family or healthy relationships.  John and Karen Troyer, along with others, provide food, clothing, transportation, moving assistance, court advocacy, counseling, job placement and help with utility bills, childcare arrangements, support groups and friendship.

Peace Foundation, North Minneapolis

At first glance, the problem seems too large, too intractable. Minneapolis is home to some of the greatest racial disparities in the country.

* African Americans are imprisoned at 20 times the rate of Caucasians
* In 2000, 44% of all African American Hennepin County men had been arrested and booked
* One out of every 9 Jordan Neighborhood residents is currently under court supervision

But there is reason to be hopeful. The PEACE Foundation is not relying on traditional models and resources to create change. Instead of adopting a charity-based or social service model, the foundation is launching a grassroots movement capable of harnessing the power of individuals, employers, congregations, institutions, and organizations.
